Eight Year Anniversary Event

Vermin on the Mount celebrates eight years of irreverent readings in L.A. on Friday August 3 at 826LA in Echo Park!

Cecil Castellucci is the author of books and graphic novels for young adults including Boy Proof, The Plain Janes, First Day on Earth. Her newest novel is The Year of the Beasts. She is the YA editor of the Los Angeles Review of Books and a two time MacDowell Fellow.

Thor Garcia is the author of the short story collection Tund and the novel The News Clown. Born in Long Beach, California, he has spent most of his adult life in Eastern Europe.

Originally from Chicago, Illinois, short story writer Mary Hamilton is the author of the chapbook We Know What We Are. She now makes her home in Los Angeles where she specializes in seeing things clearly.

Carlos Kotkin is the author of Please God Let It Be Herpes: A Heartfelt Quest for Love and Companionship. He is an L.A.-based stand-up comedian and a regular on Comedy Central.

Rob Roberge is a musician and the author of numerous books, including most recently Working Backwards from the Worst Moment of My Life. Your Life in Sex, Drugs & Rock & Roll is currently being serialized at The Rumpus.

Sarah Tomlinson is a writer, journalist and duchess of rock who has covered everything from indie rock to Tia Tequila. She lives in Los Angeles is working on a novel.

Vermin on the Mount kicks off at 7pm. Readings shortly afterward. Books and beverages all night long.

APRIL VENTURA has been rocking the San Diego comedy scene for 5 years. She is a performance coach for So Say We All and an acting coach for T3 Triple Threat a non-profit that provides free theatrical arts classes forat risk young people.

VOTM: What's the most unusual experience you've had at a reading?

KOTKIN: My most unusual experience at a reading was the time a woman approached me afterward and told me my words (about a chicken) deeply moved her. She then started bawling, dabbed her index finger with one of her tears, and slowly placed her wet finger on my forehead as a blessing. I wasn't sure what to say so I went with, "Thank you."

Look Who's Coming to Vermin: Heather Fowler (SD)

VOTM: What's the most unusual experience you've had at a reading?

FOWLER: Aside from scaring away Girl Scouts by reading fairy tale poems, that would have to be leaving a huge reading at AWP where Dorothy Allison read a story called "Frog Fucking" and every person walking out of that hall, male and female, appeared to be erotically stirred and ready to find an immediate target for meaningful lovemaking, or otherwise. 

HEATHER FOWLER is the author of two collections of magic realism stories, including most recently People with Holes published by Pink Narcissus. Her third collection, This Time While We’re Awake, will be published in spring of 2013.

Look Who's Coming to Vermin: Andrew Printer (SD)

VOTM: What's the most unusual experience you've had at a reading?

PRINTER: My most unusual experience at a reading was the time I was waiting to read at a pub in Glasgow and my friend got increasingly annoyed with some obnoxious people talking really loudly. They were either oblivious of the reading event, drunk or both. Evil looks turned into an F-bomb argument and then a fist fight that ended up on the sidewalk crashing into a group of Hari Krishnas singing and handing out marigolds to passers-by. One of the Hari Krishna’s fell into a puddle, dropping her basket of flowers in one big pile. I was so embarrassed. I started gathering the marigolds back into her basket while the fight rolled down the block. A skinny guy with a turquoise Mohawk stopped to help. We started laughing. His name was Squid. He stayed for the reading and I ended up spending the summer with him and his grandmother in her cottage on the Isle of Skye where we painted watercolor seascapes in the afternoon and ate strawberries every day.

Born in Hong Kong and raised there, Texas and rural England ANDREW PRINTER is an artist and writer who has lived in San Diego since 1991. Andrew's videos and photographs have been exhibited internationally and his work is included in several collections. His first short story, Emoticon is included in The Frozen Moment, an anthology published by Publication Studio in 2011. His project The Quilt Conversation is currently part of the Summer Salon at the San Diego Museum of Art. The quilting project happens every Friday from 6pm to 8pm concluding on Friday, August 31 with a literary performance… sort of.

Look Who's Coming to Vermin: Stacy Dyson (SD)

Performance poet, playwright, acapella vocalist... STACY DYSON has spent her life performing, singing, designing, and producing her way around the world of spoken word poetry. "It's not enough to say "We sing because we want to..we fly because we can (the motto of her arts consortium, DragonsWing). You have to actively live that life, otherwise it's all just fancy wordplay". 
 
Poet Laureate for the Imagination Celebration in Colorado Springs, 2009 Nominee for Poet Laureate for the State of Colorado, 2000 Colorado Women's Playwriting Festival winner for her play Fannie's Girls:A 4-1-1 in 5-Part Attitude, she is the author of six chapbooks, four CDs, and does one-woman shows, workshops, and literary program design all over the country. She is a featured performer , as well as performance coach and Educational Outreach Director for So Say We All (San Diego), and co-founder/innovator of PAGE TO STAGE: Women's Words, a series of writing and performance based workshops for women.
 
Based in San Diego, Stacy is preparing to tour with her fifth album SAN DIEGO STYLE, and working on her next CD 13 DAYS IN PURGATORY.

1. The time for the Vermin on the Mount event in San Diego this Sunday (July 29) has been pushed back from 7pm to 8pm. The readings will commence around 8:30pm or so. Thank you for your patience!

2. A new LA reading has been added! Come to 826 LA East in Echo Park on Friday August 3 for a night of irreverent readings with Cecil Castellucci, Thor Garcia, Carlos Kotkin, Rob Roberge and Sarah Tomlinson. More details coming soon.
