Shelly Jackson nails it with her on-point blurb of Grace Krilanovich's dizzyingly strange debut The Orange Eats Creeps: "It will mess you up." For an excerpt, book trailer, Steve Erickson's introduction and more, visit Two Dollar Radio.
VOTM: What's the most unusual experience you've ever had at a
reading?
KRILANOVICH: Oh Jeez, once, a long time ago in a Santa Cruz community college
classroom, a young hippie man-child read poetry in the nude. It was the
last day of the semester, and even though it was a photography class,
the teacher wanted us all to bring in a little something of what else we
did -- be it video, puppetry, dance, folk, poetry, etc. Unbeknownst to
us, this guy had taken off his clothes in the adjoining lab. So here we
were, waiting for the next presenter, when the man-child leaped out,
spouting some beat-type poem thing. Did I mention there was a German
Shepherd? It belonged to the TA and it was sitting in the corner. The
dog immediately ran up and nosed the hippie in the groin. The hippie
screamed and froze, even though the dog didn’t give a shit and had
already walked away.
