And we're back...
Vermin on the Mount is back with another exciting event to celebrate 14 years of irreverent readings in Southern California.
This event will take place at 7pm on Saturday, September 29, 2018, La Bodega Gallery in San Diego's Barrio Logan. You're invited to join Devon Glenn, Adam Gnade, Lilliam Rivera and L.A.'s Puro Pinche Poets, including Julie Macias, Eugenia Nicole and Ever Velasquez aka the girl about town. In the coming days and weeks we'll be posting introductions to our readers on the Vermin on the Mount website, Instagram and Twitter.
This event will take place on the same weekend as the San Diego Zine Fest at Bread & Salt, which is literally down the street, so plan accordingly. You will be able to find me there representing Razorcake and Golondrina. In the meantime, check out this stunning poster with art by Tijuana artist Charles Glaubitz and deigned by David Varela of the non-profit Starts with Arts.
Facebook no mas
I've made the surprisingly controversial decision to delete my Facebook account. I have conflicted feelings about social media. I enjoy connecting with people and learning more about my friends, acquaintances and esteemed colleagues, but that's not how Facebook views its users. They see us as consumers.
Over the years, the algorithms have changed to make it increasingly difficult to communicate arts-related happenings on Facebook without paying for ads. I don't want to sell to you. I just want to share Vermin-related news with you. Filth should be free! As a result, I will be sending out email updates more frequently than I have in the past. If you'd rather not hear from me, by all means opt out.
I have made Nuvia Crisol Guerra the administer of the Vermin on the Mount page on Facebook. And I will continue to use Instagram and Twitter for the time being. No, this isn't the perfect solution. Yes, I'm aware of the hypocrisy since Facebook owns Instagram. One step at a time...
L.A. events
The next Vermin on the Mount event in Los Angeles will be at 7:30pm Friday, November 9, 2018, at Book Show in Highland Park. Readers will be announced following our next event.
If you're in Los Angeles on Thursday, October 11, 2018, come by Book Soup to see me read new work with one of my heroes Barry Gifford as he celebrates the paperback release of his latest collection of short stories, The Cuban Club.
The Floating Library
The Floating Library is my book review column in San Diego CityBeat that runs every two weeks. It's short and sweet and reflects books I loved, regardless of their publication date. Two books I really enjoyed that came out this year are The Mars Room by Rachel Kushner and There There by Tommy Orange (kudos to Legionnaire of Vermin Josh Mohr for the tip).
If you've got a book coming out and want to be considered for The Floating Library or would like to read at an upcoming Vermin on the Mount, please drop me a line. Remember, Vermin is a community, not a clique.
Don't be bitten,
Jim
