The Ruland family received quite a surprise this weekend when we opened up the March 2012 issue of Reader's Digest and saw our faces staring back on the front page. Photographer Tamara Reynolds did a really amazing job of capturing the setting at Coronado Beach, one of our favorite places to spend time together as a family.
When I found out that "Homeward Bound" had won the contest, I didn't believe it. Not that I was skeptical, but everything about it felt unreal. The photo shoot on the beach at Coronado brought it all home -- and not just because we were wading barefoot in the water in December!
I owe a huge debt of gratitude not only to the editors and staff at Reader's Digest, but to everyone who read my story and voted. I know a lot of you voted every day and I can't thank you enough -- although I'm going to try. Check back at the end of the week for a special announcement.
